Das HICA ist ein Institut für die Restaurierung und Konservierung von Kunstwerken. Es wurde 1981 in Mannheim aus privaten Mitteln gegründet und wird von Hai-Yen Hua-Ströfer geführt. Heute gehört es zu den größten privaten Werkstätten Europas und genießt einen sehr guten internationalen Ruf.

Zu den Auftraggebern zählen große Museen in Europa und Asien sowie private Sammler. Die Arbeitsweise verknüpft traditionelle und moderne Restaurierungstechniken aus West und Ost. Dabei werden sowohl moderne naturwissenschaftliche Erkenntnisse als auch klassische Restaurierungsmethoden eingesetzt.

Im Rahmen eines EU Projektes arbeiteten wir bei der Entwicklung neuer Technologien zur Reinigung von Kunstwerken auf Papier mit. 

1998 erfolgte die öffentliche Vereidigung und Bestellung von Frau Hua-Ströfer als „Sachverständige für Kunst auf Papier und Textilien – Zustand und Restaurierung“. Im Rahmen dieser Tätigkeit begutachtet sie Schadensfälle – insbesondere auch solche, die Folge internationaler Ausstellungstätigkeit sind.

  Capabilities of the Institute


  The Institute works mainly for museums and institutions and  

  major private collections, using the latest western and oriental  

  techniques, many evolved in the Institute itself, in the following 

  fields:


■ Restoration and preservation of works of art for exhibitions

   Work has been carried out on many western works of art from

   Dürer and Raffaello to Manet and Cézanne.


■ Handling, restoration and mounting of large paper pieces in 

   deteriorating condition

   Examples are the “Mappe Monde Nouvelle Papistique” of 1564, 

   dimensions 182 cm x 139 cm, a Taima Mandala from the 14th

   century, dimensions 2 m x 2 m, and the medieval land register   

   of Überlingen.


■ Restoration and preservation of ancient and modern oriental 

   paintings and works of art

     including Buddhist paintings and manuscripts, Sanskrit works

   and documents, books, screens, woodcuts and scrolls.

   Examples of artworks: an 18 m long Chinese handscroll with

   calligraphy by Su Tung-po, dated 1088 CE,

   two Japanese scrolls by Sesshu from the 15th century.


■ Restoration of other works of art
   such as the “Heaven and Earth Globe” of Coronelli, dated 1696,

   for the German National Museum in Nuremberg.


■ Research, publications and lectures
   Hai-Yen Hua and her collaborators have published many 

   articles and papers on advanced scientific technology. 

   In 2010 Hai-Yen published a new Book: “Buddha’s Brush,

   Buddha’s Paste. Rebirth of a Taima-Mandala. Restoration

   and Origin”


Facilities of the Institute


  There are 1,000 square metres of workshop space and  

  storage for paper and silk.

  Much of the specialised machinery and tools used were

  designed and constructed in the Institute.

 

■ Hai-Yen Hua is authorised expert for works of art on   

   paper and textiles (condition and restoration)
   officially appointed and sworn in by the Chamber of 

   Commerce  and Industry Rhine-Neckar/Germany


■ Advisory services


   are provided on restoration and preservation and on the                  

   preparing of exhibitions.


■ Training

   of restorers in restoration and conservation technology 

   and of artists in different techniques like color 

   composition, painting and drawing
